On November 1st, Kelton NY hosted its first community service day and participated in the Hashtag Lunchbag social movement, which strives to eliminate hunger needs in local communities and raise awareness through social media. The Hashtag Lunchbag movement started Christmas Day 2012 when a group of friends decided to prepare hearty meals and deliver them to their local homeless community, sharing their experiences on social media with the tag #HashtagLunchbag. Their posts went viral and the Hashtag Lunchbag movement was created.
The innovative concept of Hashtag Lunchbag and entrepreneurial spirits of its founders caught our attention here at Kelton and we wanted to be a part of the movement. We shut down typical office operations last Friday and got to work making sandwiches and bagging lunches. Together our team of 17 prepared 80 lunch bags in 30 minutes.
We then broke out into small teams and headed out into New York City’s streets. Covering over 40 city blocks, we ventured to Penn Station, Port Authority, Union Square, and Washington Square. As we distributed the lunches to those in need, the goodwill spread organically and multiple bystanders offered helping hands.
The day highlighted an aspect of Kelton that I most admire: our sense of teamwork and eagerness to do what is best for the whole team. Every day we strive to do good work for our clients, but we appreciate the importance of helping out the communities that give us so much in return.
