This year’s holidays are poised to be filled with plenty of green.
But that’s not a reference to holly, Christmas trees, or even money. It’s a reference to the term “green with envy.”
According to a special report by online coupon site RetailMeNot.com, 87 percent of gift-givers report learning after they purchased a gift that they could have paid less — a realization that leads to what the organization calls “Deal Envy.”
The figure is based on a survey that RetailMeNot conducted in partnership with The Omnibus Co. between Aug. 29 and Sept. 4, with a total of 1,006 consumers.
More less-than-cheerful findings from the report:
• 26 percent of shoppers admitted to going over their budget on holiday gifts last year — a situation that led to added feelings of guilt in 27 percent of respondents and anxiety for another 20 percent of consumers.
• 74 percent of shoppers admitted to passing on gifts for themselves, so as to avoid feelings of guilt.
• 14 percent of gift givers admitted to overspending because they had waited until the last minute to shop.
